DC Studios may have had a bumpy road this past year, but the newly minted Skydance subsidiary seems to be finding a clear path forward. After the disastrous release of the summer blockbuster Supergirl, which saw a short run in theaters after poor reviews and even worse box office, the studio, helmed by co-chairmen James Gunn and Peter Safran, found success with its next project. The HBO series Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, set viewership records and also earned plenty of critical acclaim through its eight-episode run. Now, with their next film Clayface set to premiere in a week, the focus will soon shift to James Gunn’s next project, Man of Tomorrow.
James Gunn has been somewhat active on social media, particularly Threads, engaging with DCU fans and offering fascinating creative insight into projects currently in production. In a recent Threads post listing rumors about Man of Tomorrow and a supposedly “disastrous” test screening, Gunn replied, saying no one has seen the film yet… Until today. Gunn’s post said he barely managed to deliver the first “director’s cut” of Man of Tomorrow for Peter Safran to watch today, meaning the highly anticipated follow-up to 2025’s Superman has reached a huge milestone: the first viewable cut is complete. For now, however, the only person watching this version of the movie is fellow DC Studios Chairman Peter Safran.
James Gunn has become a filmmaker known for efficient production schedules and planning, often with specific shot lists and storyboards that help keep filming as smooth as possible. So, Gunn having a director’s cut of Man of Tomorrow ready to view nine months before the official theatrical release is no surprise. There has been a lot of speculation about the upcoming movie, which has slowly felt less like a Superman sequel (as Gunn stated before production began) and more like an ensemble piece meant to build out the greater DCU.
