After revisiting Prince Akeem Joffer in Coming 2 America, Eddie Murphy is set to reprise one of his most iconic characters — Axel Foley. Production on Beverly Hills Cop 4 recently began, and a few set photos have emerged showcasing Murphy in a Detroit Lions letterman jacket with his arm in a sling.
The Beverly Hills Cop 4 photos also include a look at Taylour Paige, who was recently announced to be joining the sequel alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The official title for the sequel is Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Paul Reiser is also expected to reprise his role as Detective Jeffrey Friedman from the first two movies.
Eddie Murphy first played Axel Foley in 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop, which found the street-wise Detroit cop travelling to California to track down the killers of his friend. Even though it was out of his jurisdiction, Foley teamed up with two reluctant detectives from the Beverly Hills Police Department. The film was a major success and spawned two sequels, Beverly Hills Cop 2 and Beverly Hills Cop 3, although neither film did as well as the first.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah were once expected to direct Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley but wound up departing to focus on Batgirl. I think we all know how that went. Mark Molloy has stepped in to direct from a screenplay by Will Beall. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley doesn’t have an official release date yet, but it will be released on Netflix when all is said and done.
