Marvel’s Upcoming ‘X-Men’ Film Has Found Its Angel

Asa Germann

Marvel Studios has identified yet another of its core X-Men, as Asa Germann has reportedly been cast as Warren Worthington III—better known as Angel—in the upcoming relaunch.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit reported Germann’s involvement on Thursday afternoon. The 28-year-old is perhaps best known for his role as Sam Riordan in the Amazon Prime Video series Gen V, and he also appeared in this year’s Scream 7.

There’s long been speculation that Marvel’s X-Men relaunch would focus on the team as it existed at the time of its 1963 creation. The original team included five members: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast, and Angel, with Charles Xavier serving as the group’s mentor/proprietor.

Germann joining the cast as Angel lends some credence to this rumor. Iceman and Beast have not been cast, though there have been murmurs of Marvel pursuing Beef star Charles Melton for the latter part.

THR reports that Germann auditioned for the Cyclops role, which ultimately went to Kit Connor. The part of Angel is a pretty decent consolation prize.

For those unfamiliar, Angel is a mutant who has angelic wings protruding from his back. He comes from a wealthy family and is, at least initially, rather conceited and unpleasant.

He’s one of the X-Men property’s more underutilized mutants on screen. Despite there existing countless engaging Angel stories in the comic book medium and inherent intrigue in the idea of the societal ramifications of a person having literal angel wings, the character has appeared in nothing but irredeemably bad movies.

Angel was portrayed by Ben Foster in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand and Ben Hardy in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. He’s not a major character in either film, and both are quite excruciating to get through.

Marvel revealed the initial cast of its upcoming X-Men film at this year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. The lineup is as follows:

  • Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier
  • Sadie Sink as Jean Grey
  • Kit Connor as Cyclops
  • Samara Weaving as Emma Frost
  • Maya Boyd as Storm
  • Inde Navarrette as Rogue
  • Adam Driver as Mister Sinister

If it’s true that this first Marvel Cinematic Universe X-Men film will focus on the team’s original members, it will be interesting to see how Emma Frost, Storm, and Rogue factor into the narrative.

Though all three are today intrinsically associated with the group, none are original members. Initially a villain, Frost did not officially join the X-Men until Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run (2001).

Though arguably the team’s most engaging and interesting leader, Storm did not first appear until 12 years after the comic’s creation. Rogue, like Frost, debuted as an antagonist before ultimately joining the team.

Marvel’s first X-Men film will be directed by Jake Schreier, who previously directed Thunderbolts* for the studio. The movie will hit theaters on May 5, 2028.
