Hulu’s upcoming Southern Bastards adaptation is shaping up to be a very different kind of comic book show. Based on the award-winning graphic novel by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, the series has already been framed as sharing the same gritty, vigilante DNA as The Punisher, even if it sits well outside Marvel territory.
According to Variety, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple actor Erin Kellyman has been cast as the female lead in Southern Bastards, where she’ll play Roberta, a “tenacious” military veteran who returns to her Alabama hometown in search of her estranged father.
It’s an intriguing casting choice for a project that already looks more grounded and violent than the average comic adaptation. Southern Bastards is not secretly turning into a Marvel offshoot (though Kellyman did star in the MCU’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier), but the comparison isn’t hard to understand. The series itself has been described as “Punisher-style,” and the connection runs deeper than just tone.
The pilot is being directed and executive-produced by Reinaldo Marcus Green, who’s also involved in the MCU project The Punisher: One Last Kill. That overlap adds an extra layer of interest, especially for those of us who have been waiting for more grim, character-driven material in their comic-book adaptations.
Kellyman’s Roberta also sounds like the kind of role that could push Southern Bastards beyond straightforward genre fare. The official logline describes the character as “a former marine who is facing charges by the military after an incident in Afghanistan. Intelligent and psychologically complex – constantly trying to understand and outrun her generational trauma and inherited violence. When she comes to Craw County, she’s just out for revenge, but if she’s going to change this county for good and topple everything Boss has built, she’s got to put down roots and find a home in the town.”
Kevin Bacon stars as Earl Tubb, Roberta’s father, while Tim McGraw is set to play the chief antagonist, Coach Boss. That’s a strong hook already, with Bacon bringing some gravitas, and McGraw makes an intriguing choice for a villain. Kellyman now sits at the center of what could become one of Hulu’s more distinctive genre efforts.
It’s not bad timing for the announcement, either. Kellyman’s profile is already rising thanks to The Bone Temple, and her casting positions her at the center of another project with serious franchise potential. The role may not come with a skull logo or Marvel branding, but the appeal is clear enough.
