22 Years Later, Hugh Jackman’s Gothic Action Thriller Sets New Release

When Hugh Jackman unleashed his iconic claws as Wolverine, he skyrocketed to global fame, kicking off a career-defining era of cinematic dominance. The actor established himself as Hollywood’s go-to leading man for high-stakes blockbusters that demanded both immense physicality and undeniable charm. He commanded the big screen, leaping from the cyber thrills of Swordfish to the time-traveling romance of Kate & Leopold, proving that he could conquer a wide range of genres. Yet, it was his involvement in a massive, effects-heavy studio project that truly promised to push his newly minted star power to its absolute limits, setting the stage for an action-packed thrill ride that is now preparing to make a triumphant comeback.

That project is none other than Stephen Sommers’ Van Helsing, a sprawling gothic horror-action extravaganza that saw Jackman trade his mutant claws for a monster-hunting crossbow. The actor brought a brooding intensity and rugged charisma to the titular warrior as he faced off against the world’s most terrifying creatures, including Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein’s monster. Defined by its relentless pacing, striking monster designs, and soaring orchestral score, the film garnered a passionate cult following and ended up becoming a nostalgic staple of the early 2000s despite receiving a mixed critical reception.

“Famed monster slayer Gabriel Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) is dispatched to Transylvania to assist the last of the Valerious bloodline in defeating Count Dracula (Richard Roxburgh). Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale) reveals that Dracula has formed an unholy alliance with Dr. Frankenstein’s monster (Shuler Hensley) and is hell-bent on exacting a centuries-old curse on her family. Together, Anna and Van Helsing set out to destroy their common enemy, but uncover some unsettling secrets along the way.”

When it opened in theaters in 2004, Van Helsing was instantly met with a harsh critical storm, earning an abysmal 24% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviewers panned the blockbuster as a hollow creature feature that suffered from CGI overload and an overstuffed plot. The negative word-of-mouth ultimately impacted its performance at the box office. While it initially opened at number one, it suffered steep attendance drops in the subsequent weeks. The movie concluded its theatrical run with $300.2 million worldwide against a massive production budget estimated at between $160 million and $170 million.

Despite the critical lashing and muted box office result, audiences saw something special in the chaotic monster mashup, awarding it a much warmer 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. Over the past two decades, that fan appreciation has blossomed into a full-blown legacy, transforming Van Helsing into a beloved cult classic that is widely celebrated for its unapologetic maximalism and sheer crowd-pleasing joy. The film’s enduring fandom is now being rewarded like never before, as Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is finally bringing the wild gothic thrill ride out of the shadows and into the spotlight again for a surprise new release.
