2023 Emmys Best Supporting Actress in Limited Series Predictions

As more shows roll out, Emmy favorites Niecy Nash-Betts (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) and Claire Danes (“Fleishman Is in Trouble”) standout as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie contenders.

We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2023 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 15 to June 26, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 12. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be presented over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10, with an edited presentation of the ceremonies to be broadcast on FXX at a later date. Finally, the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Monday, September 18, and air live on FOX at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

Networks can breathe easier knowing that it is very unlikely that any shows in the running for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie will take up almost all the nomination slots the way “The White Lotus” did last year. Similar to last year though, there is one clear frontrunner coming out of the winter awards season.

“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” star Niecy Nash-Betts, who already has four Emmy nominations to her name, including one in this category for the 2019 Netflix series “When They See Us,” won the Critics Choice Award for playing Glenda Cleveland on the Ryan Murphy-produced series depicting the infamous serial killer. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award, but lost to last year’s winner Jennifer Coolidge, who is now ineligible for the category because her character on “The White Lotus” has a continuing storyline in Season 2. “Fleishman Is in Trouble” star Claire Danes is really the only other actress from a new series to have broken through, as the winter award shows tend to be a mix of talent that already had an Emmy run, and the stars of shows that premiered after 2022 Emmys eligibility.

That all said, most of this year’s contenders are from late winter, early spring premieres. “Daisy Jones and the Six” has proven to be the biggest roles yet for young actresses Camila Morrone and Suki Waterhouse. The former particularly has an arc on the buzzy literary adaptation that almost warrants an upgrade to the Lead Actress category next to co-star Riley Keough. Speaking of series based on popular books, the new FX adaptation of “Great Expectations” seems like it’s built around Olivia Colman’s portrayal of the classic character Miss Havisham. And one can never count out “Extrapolations” star Meryl Streep to catch the eye of awards bodies, even though the three-time Oscar winner has never been nominated in this category (her two acting Emmys are for playing the lead).

Still to come are HBO Max’s “Love and Death,” which could finally allow “American Horror Story” favorite Lily Rabe to break into the category, and HBO’s “White House Plumbers,” which could earn iconic character actress Judy Greer her first Emmy nomination, and “Game of Thrones” star Lena Headey’s sixth.

Last Year’s Winner: Jennifer Coolidge, “The White Lotus”
Still Eligible: Kind of (She moved categories).
Hot Streak: Coolidge actually does have a couple performances from the last year that are on the fence of qualifying her for this category, which would make it possible for her to win two years in a row. More likely though is HBO taking this particular Emmy home for the third consecutive year.
Notable Ineligible Series: Aubrey Plaza, Meghann Fahy, Haley Lu Richardson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Simona Tobasco, and Beatrice Grannò, “The White Lotus: Sicily” (submitted as a Drama Series); Jennifer Jason Leigh, Richa Moorjani, and Jessica Pohly, “Fargo” (Season 5 was not eligible)
