Though Apple TV+ prison drama “Black Bird” has received the most attention on the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie front, last year’s Emmy winner is already back as a contender in the category again.

The nomination round of voting takes place from June 15 to June 26, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 12. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be presented over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10, with an edited presentation of the ceremonies to be broadcast on FXX at a later date. Finally, the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Monday, September 18, and air live on FOX at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.
The State of the Race
The contenders are still rolling out, but 2023 is already an interesting year for the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie category at the Primetime Emmys. Last year’s winner Murray Bartlett is already back in the running with a pivotal role on Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales” that could lead the Australian actor to become the first person to win the category twice in a row. Not too much is known about Domhnall Gleeson’s role in the upcoming HBO series “White House Plumbers,” but should it be on similar level to his unnerving role in the FX on Hulu series “The Patient,” he stands a chance of being the first actor nominated in the category twice in one year.
The show to watch here though, both because of quality work and unfortunate circumstances, is the Apple TV+ prison drama “Black Bird.” Star Ray Liotta died about a month before the series premiere, and has since received some posthumous awards nominations for his performance in it. However, the co-star that has won several awards for the show is Paul Walter Hauser. Should there be only a couple show’s dominating the category like last year, expect Greg Kinnear to make the cut too for his detective role in the Dennis Lehane-helmed show.
Looking at the rest of the landscape, “Fire Island” star Bowen Yang, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” star Richard Jenkins, and “Fleishman Is in Trouble” star Adam Brody are all actors who gave notable performances in projects that found a wide audience. Still to come is the aforementioned “White House Plumbers” on HBO, which could net even more contenders, plus the various stars on the currently airing Apple TV+ anthology series “Extrapolations,” like Tobey Maguire, and even Patrick Fugit in HBO Max’s “Love and Death.”
