Of course, this criteria just serves as a guide for the overall experience that is ultimately about your bond as a couple. “The four Cs are important factors in categorizing and valuing natural diamonds,” explains Grant Mobley, jewelry and watch editor at the Natural Diamond Council. “However, they do not tell the whole story of a diamond. People often get too focused on the specifications of the diamond and forget that the most important factor is that it be the most beautiful to you.”
Ring styles run the full gamut to reflect every personality and aesthetic, but two engagement ring trends that stand out for 2023 are bezel settings and antique cut diamonds, according to Landau. “The bezel setting offers a sleek and modern twist to a traditional solitaire ring,” she shares, noting that they are particularly popular for geometric shapes. “Another huge trend for 2023 will be antique cut diamonds like old European cuts and old mine cuts. Our clients and followers love the antique cut diamonds because of the unique charm and individuality of the stones—no two are alike!”
While traditional engagement rings feature a diamond center stone, any ring can be an engagement ring—it’s the sentiment that counts. Couples may prefer alternative styles featuring colored gemstones or lab-created diamonds. Again, it all comes down to personal taste and preference.
Price is another factor that doesn’t have to conform to any rules. Though there are long-standing myths about how much you “should” spend on an engagement ring, our experts are dispelling such notions. “There is no rule that you have to spend three months’ salary or anything arbitrary like that,” says Landau. “My best advice is this: Both sides of the couple should be on the same page about their budget.”
She also emphasizes that there are no strict numbers attached to how much stones cost: “All in all, there’s no one number that equals all one-carat or two-carat diamonds,” Landau advises. “That being said, a one-carat diamond is generally $5,000, two carats are around $13,000 to $15,000, and three carats are around $25,000 to $35,000. It all depends on the four Cs and the shape, but those are some general guidelines.”
Another pro tip? “Two diamonds of the exact same grading characteristics can look very different since every natural diamond is completely one of a kind,” explains Mobley. “Natural diamonds are available at every price point and often, people can be more drawn to diamonds that have lower grading characteristics when they see them in person, hence saving them money.”
