2023 San Diego Comic-Con saw some stunning superhero cosplays that will leave fans in awe. San Diego Comic-Con is the biggest event that celebrates animation, video games, tv series, movies, and more based on the incredible source material that is comic books. While 2023 San Diego Comic-Con suffered many changes, with a number of panels getting canceled and movie studios skipping the event due to Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the event still thrived.
2023 San Diego Comic-Con focused more on the reason the event exits — the comics — with the absence of several major Hollywood studios teasing their upcoming comic book adaptations. While Marvel Studios skipping a Hall H presentation, which usually contains the biggest announcements of the year, was certainly disappointing for many, fans still showed up in droves to celebrate their favorite characters and comics. As usual, a number of incredible cosplays emerged, and 13 rank among the most exciting superhero cosplays of 2023’s San Diego Comic-Con.
13 Spider-Verse Kingpin
On Twitter, @patloika shared this stunning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Kingpin cosplay. While Wilson Fisk is a character who is known for being a physically imposing foe to Spider-Man, Daredevil, and other street-level Marvel heroes, the character in the animated Spider-Verse movie is a proportion nightmare. Yet, somehow, a cosplayer was able to perfectly recreate the animated Kingpin’s massive body with a small head at San Diego Comic-Con.
12 Cosmo The Spacedog
The official Marvel Twitter account shared a heartwarming Guardians of the Galaxy cosplay rooted in recent Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Jackson the Fire Dog appeared in the convention dressed up as the MCU’s version of Cosmo the Spacedog, which debuted in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and most recently became a member of the new version of the team in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
11 Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Team Suits
@_michaelgleason encountered a group of cosplayers dressed up as the MCU’s most formidable cosmic team. Yondu, Mantis, Star-Lord, and Rocket — with a woman wearing a raccoon mask to become Rocket Raccoon — came to life in the cosplay. The cosplayers were using the new team suits from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which are based on one of the team’s most iconic comic book uniforms. The new MCU suits look as good in the cosplay as they did in the movie.
10 Sam Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy’s J. Jonah Jameson
@ParksAndCons shares this stunning cosplay that brings J. Jonah Jameson to life perfectly. While actor J.K. Simmons has played different versions of JJJ from all across the multiverse, including popular franchises such as the MCU and the Spider-Verse films, the actor’s first time in the role for director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy remains the most iconic live-action version of JJJ. The cosplayer perfectly brings Raimi’s JJJ to life, Daily Bugle newspaper included.
9 Daredevil and She-Hulk
A fan-favorite MCU romance comes to life in this cosplay shared by @ParksAndCons, with Matt Murdock/ Daredevil and Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk becoming a real-life dynamic legal team. Charlie Cox played Matt Murdock for three seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil before returning to the role in the MCUs Spider-Man: No Way Home. The character then appeared in two episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, the debut of Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters. Daredevil and She-Hulk’s relationship was one of the show’s high points.
8 Aquaman
On Twitter, @DCComicsNews shared some photos from DC cosplays ranging from comics, TV shows, and movies. Among them was this stunning Jason Momoa DCEU Aquaman cosplay, which manages to replicate the Atlantean armor used by Arthur Curry in 2018’s Aquaman. With the upcoming DC Universe reboot on the horizon, December’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom could be Momoa’s last time in the role. If it is, at least Comic-Con revealed Aquaman 2‘s new costume is an exciting look for the actor’s possible final movie as the hero.
7 Ronan The Accuser
2023 San Diego Comic-Con included a Marvel Cosplay Competition, and @namorcosplay won first place among the several exciting superhero cosplays seen in the event. The cosplayer went in as an MCU antagonist, appearing as Ronan the Accuser, the character that served as the main foe to the Guardians of the Galaxy in the team’s first movie and crossed Captain Marvel’s path in her debut film. The Ronan cosplay looks like it was plucked straight from the MCU films.
6 Reed Richards
On Twitter, Marvel shared some of the best superhero costumes that appeared in 2023’s San Diego Comic-Con. Among them was this fantastic Reed Richards cosplay that recreates the suit used by Ioan Gruffud’s Mister Fantastic in the 2000s Fantastic Four movies. While John Krasinski was the multiverse variant of Reed that appeared in the MCU’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Gruffud version of the character from the original Fantastic Four movies, which inspired the cool cosplay, could still show up thanks to Marvel’s Multiverse Saga.
5 Thor
Continuing with the cosplays shared by Marvel is this cosplayer who showed up to San Diego Comic-Con dressed up as Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. The incredible recreation of one of Thor’s MCU suits is made whole by the presence of the hero’s mighty hammer, Mjolnir. Thor is one of the last original MCU Avengers still active for Marvel Studios, and fans continue to show up to support the hero.
4 Howard The Duck
Marvel shared this exciting video of a cosplayer as Howard the Duck at Comic-Con. The character has appeared in a few MCU projects, always in a cameo role, but that has not stopped him from having quite a passionate fanbase, with the comics and his hilarious 1986 live-action film making Howard the Duck achieve a cult status among Marvel fans. The cosplayer looks like a perfect mesh between the live-action film Howard the Duck and the character in the comics.
3 Captain America & Captain Carter
Marvel also shared an MCU team-up cosplay. Two cosplayers used the multiverse to come through with fantastic recreations of Steve Rogers’ Captain America suit from Avengers: Endgame and Peggy Carter’s Captain Carter suit, which was initially seen in Marvel Studios’ first animated series on Disney+, What If…? The character then appeared through the multiverse with Hayley Atwell playing Captain Carter in live-action in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
2 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s Peter B. Parker, Mayday & Miguel O’Hara
Marvel was not only looking out for MCU cosplayers at 2023’s San Diego Comic-Con, with a duo of cosplayers bringing to life a refreshing take on a few popular characters from this year’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The heartwarming cosplay sees a man become Peter B. Parker, tossing a Mayday Parker doll back and forth with a female cosplayer in the role of Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara — Spider-Man 2099 — the leader of the Spider-Society.
1 Zombie Captain America
@DAPs_Magic encountered some exciting superhero cosplays at Comic-Con, with this exciting recreation of Marvel Studios’ What If… Zombies?! episode of the MCU’s first Disney+ animated series. Zombie Captain America appears to have been plucked straight from the series for the cosplay, with a Zombie Sam Wilson cosplayer in the background of the eerie cosplay photo. With the upcoming Marvel Zombies show set to debut in the coming years, it is likely that this 2023 San Diego Comic-Con cosplay choice will soon become even more popular in future editions of the event.
