Timothee Chalamet has been something of a rising star in the entertainment industry recently. Although he’s done acting in tevelsion and film since 2009, it was with 2021’s Dune that he came into the mainstream spotlight, taking on the role of the main character Paul Atreides, a role he is set to return to in Dune: Part Two. In addition, he is set to play a young Willy Wonka in Wonka, a musical film detailing the character’s rise before opening his world famous chocolate factory. Before that is set to come out though, this year he will be joining Canadian actress Taylor Russell in a romance film with a dark, cannibalistic twist; Bones & All. Prior to this project, Russell received praise in the acclaimed drama Waves(2019), Words on Bathroom Walls(2020), and her appearance in the Escape Room series of horror films.
Based on a book of the same name by Camille DeAngelis, the story follows two teenage cannibals, Maren Yearly(Russell) and Lee(Chalamet) who fall in love with one another, as they journey together throughout America during the Reagan Administration. The original book tackled themes of feminism, loneliness, self-loathing, and of course, cannibalism and the moral implications it carries. The film is expected to carry over many of these themes, with director Luca Guadagnino stating the film is, ‘a very romantic story, about the impossibility of love and yet, the need for it. Even in extreme circumstances.’
Guadagnino has been known for his work on the films The Protagonists, I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, and Suspiria. The director previously worked with Chalamet on his 2017 film, Call Me by Your Name, another novel adaptation, this time by Andre Aciman. The novel follows the relationship between Chalamet’s Elio Perlman and Armie Hammer’s Oliver. The film would go on to become a critical success, even receiving the nomination for Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards. Guadagnino is no stranger to romance films and psychological thrillers, so a project like Bones & All seems like a perfect match for the ideas of this director.
Joining the cast will be Mark Rylance, Michael Stuhlbarg, Andre Holland, Jessica Harper, Chloe Sevigny, Francesca Scorsese, David Gordon Green, Anna Cobb, Jake Horowitz, and Kendle Coffey as the character Sherry. The screenplay was written by David Kajganich, a frequent colaborator with Guadagnino. Handling the music will be Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The film is set to have a 2 hour 10 minute runtime, and will see its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in September, with a US release set for November 23.
