My Preamble
For anyone who read the recap for S01E01, you will know that not only have I predicted this series will be wildly successful, I also shared with you that my husband watched it with me. Why does this matter? Well it doesn’t really, but I think it’s noteworthy that a man who rarely watches anything outside of sports, is now locked in. He’s a fan. I heard him yesterday, talking about the show with our son. “Say whaaaa?” Looks like Tuesday nights is our new “date night.”
The subtext of S01E02 deals with family. How parents raise you and teach you and set your feet upon the ground to find your own way. Perhaps it isn’t an idealistic notion then, that what I’m witnessing throughout the fandom is so familial. Supernatural is a show so loved, that it’s fandom languishes affectionately for a return of Sam and Dean Winchester. In the absence of that, what better way to assuage their thirst, then to introduce a new incarnation of that world. And they have expertly hit a home run. The Winchesters does feel like a part of the Supernatural universe. How wonderful then, that this show, these young actors and this cast, has beguiled us so effortlessly. And it’s only the second episode! Bring it!
Before I dive into the episode recap, I am making a declaration. Mary Campbell, John Winchester, Latika Desai and Carlos Cervantez are the Fab 4. The term has forever been associated with the Beatles, but I’m appropriating it. Sorry, John, Paul, Ringo and George. You know I will always love you.
Episode Recap
Carried over from episode one, the Fab 4 have travelled to Savannah, Georgia to the Men of Letters (MOL) clubhouse. There are two things they are hoping to find; (1) Samuel Campbell, and (2) Documents that will show them how the Akrida have been crossing over into our world, so they can utilize the magic box to stop them. What they find when they get there are several dead zombies. They are soon under attack by two additional zombies and discover that the magic box designed to kill monsters, isn’t working.
After John and Mary kill the remaining zombies, they search for any evidence that Samuel had been there. They find a shotgun shell with SC initials on it, and a newspaper article about a missing boy in Topeka, Kansas. None of the Akrida files they were looking for are there. Mary decides that the group needs to go to Topeka. There is some dissension within the group regarding Mary’s decision-making. Her decisions affect them all, but her singular focus is finding Samuel. Carlos would like to continue hunting for the Akrida files.
While driving back to Kansas from Georgia, John and Mary talk. John tells her that while he was in the Marines, he was a scout. It was his job to find things. After two weeks of being unable to find Samuel, John is beginning to doubt himself. He is also beginning to have doubts about his ability to be a hunter. Mary offered reassurances that it will all come with time.
Before going to Topeka, they stop at the Winchester garage. After a week of not hearing from John, Millie is upset, and they get into an argument. John believes that his mother thinks he isn’t good enough to follow in his father’s footsteps. Once thing that Millie mentioned was that she got a call from Betty while John was away. Who is Betty?
Mary and John are back in Topeka to interview Barry’s dad so Carlos made them college ID cards and has given them rock aliases of Mick Fleetwood and Christine McVie. They find out that they do have a case in Topeka, and they have to go under cover in a commune, which makes Carlos very happy as he begins to sing the Age of Aquarius.
The Fab 4 split up to begin their investigation and Mary is convinced that the leader Clyde is a suspect.
Back at home, Ada visits Millie. Ada tries to give Millie some reassurance that John will be okay. She gives Millie a piece of paper that has the name and address of the motel John is staying at in Topeka. It’s a gesture meant to give Millie some peace of mind. Ada notices a vine that is growing up the wall of the garage and asks if she can take some. Ada tells Millie that the vine is Jasmine and is for protection.
As our Fab 4 continue their investigation, they begin to suspect that it is a shapeshifter who is attacking, and Clyde becomes the next victim. Mary thinks the monster is a mimic who are only vulnerable to weapons made out of copper. Carlos has none, so John takes a van from one of the hippies at the commune and goes back to the motel for copper.
The monster seems to be connected to a rare purple flower that Lata is unable to identify. She doesn’t think the monster they are dealing with is a mimic. She calls Ada.
Ada is back in Lawrence at the MOL clubhouse, and she brews herself a tea made out of the Jasmine cutting she took from Millie’s and drinks it. The tea makes her go into some sort of trance as she begins to write things down.
Back at the commune, Mary and Carlos are walking in the forest around the grounds. Carlos tells Mary that she needs to listen to the others in the group. Carlos thinks she should idolize her father less and learn to be a leader without him. Lata finds them and tells them she has identified the monster. It is La Tunda who preys on disobedient children. She captures them and feeds on them slowly in her lair.
Mary is especially concerned because John’s current situation with his mom makes him a prime target for La Tunda.
John, while at the motel collecting copper, is visited by his mom, which is La Tunda in disguise. John is captured and taken.
When Mary, Carlos and Lata arrive at the motel, they are too late. They discover that the only way to kill La Tunda is to use her own magic against her and devise a plan that will break off a piece of her, that they can use to stab her in the heart.
Back at La Tunda’s lair, we see her begin to attack Barry. John breaks free and helps Clyde escape before she comes after him. As John is trying to fight her off, Mary, Carlos and Lata show up to help. John is able to break off a piece of La Tunda’s “trunk” and Mary picks it up and uses it to stab her in the heart. She sinks into the earth.
When the Fab 4 arrive back in Lawrence, they go to the Winchester Garage. Carlos and Lata leave, Mary heads for her car (repaired by Millie) and drives away. John and Millie talk, and she tells John that she believes in him. They hug it out and Millie suggests they adopt the same rule that she and Henry had, and that is to always stop and let the other person know how much you love them.
Back at the MOLs clubhouse, Mary, Lata, and Carlos dig into a pizza just as John shows up. Ada comes in and tells them she has a lead on the box. They all follow her to another part of the clubhouse, and she tells them about the auto-writing she did. There is a demon out there that has the answers they need regarding the box, Samuel’s whereabouts, and the Akrida.
A hooded figure collects the soul of La Tundra from her resting place. Who is this hooded person? And what are the creatures that follow?
