Emma Roberts has just been cast in the highly anticipated Madame Webb movie. Roberts was previously seen in FX’s American Horror Story, playing the roles of Madison Montgomery, Maggie Esmerelda, and Brooke Thompson. She is also known for her role in Fox’s series Scream Queens as Chanel Oberlin, and We’re The Millers. For Roberts, this will mark her first Marvel movie in the cinematic universe.
Madame Webb first appears as a mutant in The Amazing Spider-Man comic No. 210. The film will be directed by S.J. Clarkson who has also done Marvel’s Jessica Jones” and The Defenders. Screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless who have both collaborated on Morbius. Roberts now joins Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, and Dakota Johnson (Madame Webb) as part of the Marvel cast. This film will be amongst Sony’s lineup which consists of Venom, Morbius, and Kraven The Hunter. It will also be within the Spider-Verse in some capacity. Marvel has yet to announce how the two will be intertwined. However, there are details that are known based on the comics about Webb.
According to the comics, stricken with a lifetime of blindness and a chronic autoimmune disorder, Cassandra Webb (also known as Madame Webb), is an elderly woman, who experienced significant neurological deterioration throughout her life. She specializes in predicting the future of Spider-related superheroes. She even mentored Spider-Man and spearheaded a group of superheroes who would go on to be called Spider-Woman.
However, Webb was placed in a coma and suffered from short-term memory loss after she tried to help Spider-Man prevent the assassination of a political figure. Once she regains her memory, she reunites with Spider-Man and asks him to retrieve one of the required artifact fragments that would aid in the arcane ritual of Gathering of the Five to save her life. Of the five options knowledge, power, immortality, insanity, or death, Spider-Man helps her receive immortality, which allows her to revert to a younger, healthier version of herself.
This film will be an origin story of the clairvoyant Webb, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world. Stay tuned as Sony plans on making more announcements in the coming weeks per the movie and casting. As of now, Madame Web is currently set for a July 7, 2023 release.
