While it has been confirmed for some time that an animated series coming to Disney+ focusing on the origins of Peter Parker in the context of the MCU was in development, more information has come out from SDCC of the prequel series Spider-man : Freshman Year. This includes confirmation of various characters who will be in the show, both familiar and new, to the MCU. (It should also be noted that the confirmed follow-up season will be Spider-Man : Sophmore Year, which as to be expected, will follow Peter in his sophmore year of high school).
Perhaps the most exciting of these announcements, was the confirmation of Charlie Cox returning to voice Daredevil, possibly offering an explanation for how Peter and Matt Murdock knew each other in Spider-Man : No Way Home, and why Peter would trust him as his attorney. We’ve also got confirmation of other characters that will be present in the show, such as Scorpion, Dr. Octavious, the Chameleon, and even the MCU version of Norman and Harry Osborn.
It is currently unknown if Tom Holland will return to voice Peter Parker, alongside actors Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina for Green Goblin and Doc Ock respectively. That said, many fans are uncertain as to how it will fit into the MCU canon, given that going off of Spider-Man : No Way Home, his encounter with the versions of these characters from the Sam Raimi films seems to be his first time encountering any version of said characters. In addition, when the audience was first introduced to the MCU Peter in Captain America : Civil War and Spider-Man : Homecoming, it’s generally believed that this is the first major exposure Peter has had with other super human beings, with him generally having been supporting the ordinary citizen in their day to day lives.
It’s also unknown just how much Sony’s involvement in the series amounts to, seeing as they own the film rights to Spider-Man. Regardless, given the MCU tends to carefully consider the placement of their stories, in addition to how everything connects, it can at the very least be presumed that Kevin Feigi and many of the other creative minds at Marvel Studios would be aware of the potential problems that could arise from this story, and have found ways to fit it into the current MCU without having it contradict anything that’s already been long established.
Spider-Man : Freshman Year will swing onto Disney+ in 2024.
