Santa Fe First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies and special prosecutor Andrea Reeb announced their decision this morning (January 19, 2023) in a written statement shared with media, that Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will each be charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter for the October 21, 2021 fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer for the film, Rust. The district attorney also stated that no charges will be filed regarding Director Joel Souza, who was also injured in the shooting.
First assistant director David Halls has already agreed to plead guilty for the charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.
Luke Nikas, Baldwin’s lawyer, has announced their intention to fight the charges. Similarly, attorney for Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, Jason Bowles stated that the charges were not unexpected, but that he suspects she will be found not guilty by a jury.
At this point, there is no announcement regarding a trial, but should that be the case, a jury would have to decide under which definition of involuntary manslaughter Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed are guilty.
While the public debate rages on regarding gun safety on film sets, it is sad news for all those involved, having to relive this tragedy.
