Trying — one of Apple TV’s sweetest, most underrated treasures — returns for its fifth season on July 8, and no surprise, the series is as charming and comforting as ever. Season 5 picks up shortly after Season 4’s eventful finale, which left Scott’s (Darren Boyd) fate up in the air and saw Princess (Scarlett Rayner) and Tyler’s (Cooper Turner) biological mom Kat (Charlotte Riley) turn up on Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason’s (Rafe Spall) doorstep. With her arrival comes expected chaos, heavy emotions, and evolving dynamics. As Princess gets to know Kat better, Nikki and Jason explore new professional opportunities, while Karen (Siân Brooke) adjusts to her new normal. Five season in, the heartfelt comedy created by Andy Walton still shines. Trying feels like a warm hug, like spotting a familiar face in a crowd, or collapsing on your couch after a long day. It’s a beautiful, witty celebration of unique families that stresses the importance of showing up for one another, and I pray it returns for many more seasons.
