New DCU Batman Favorite Teases Superhero Future Following Recent Casting Rumors

Though the second movie in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, Supergirl, has struggled to take flight at the box office, there is still a lot of excitement around what the Guardians of the Galaxy director will do with the comic book trinity alongside Superman. While we’ll have to await news about Wonder Woman, a hot new rumor has revealed one actor that’s in contention for Batman. And he’s now confirmed his interest while speaking exclusively to MovieWeb.

While there have been glimpses and hints towards The Dark Knight’s existence in the DCU, we still don’t know all that much about him or who will play him when he does eventually emerge from the shadows on the big screen. However, we do know that the DCU Batman will lead The Brave and the Bold, which was officially announced all the way back in January 2023, as part of the DC Universe’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” slate. Drawing inspiration from Grant Morrison’s acclaimed comic run of the same name, the DCU outing will introduce Bryce Wayne’s estranged son, Damian, who becomes the fifth Robin alongside a more experienced Batman.

In a conversation with MovieWeb at the debut of new MGM+ crime drama series The Westies, star Tom Brittney revealed that, following rumors that he has now been cast as Gunn’s Caped Crusader after coming achingly close to playing Superman before David Corenswet won the part, the dual role of Bruce Wayne and Batman would be “up there” on his list of dream roles. Interesting.

While he doesn’t confirm whether he will don the cape and cowl or not, Brittney did at least hint that there is something superheroic in his future, saying…

“When I was a kid, of all the superheroes, Batman was probably up there. That was probably one of my favorites. But, keep an open mind, see what comes to my future.”

This certainly sounds like, at the very least, after losing the Superman role, Brittney has been in conversation with someone (probably Gunn) about a different comic book movie character. Whether that’s Batman or not remains to be seen, but he certainly has the lantern jaw required to slip effortlessly into what must be a stifling mask, as well as the 6’2” stature to stand over and strike fear in the hearts of Gotham’s various villains.

Continuing the conversation, Brittney also revealed that he would be more than open to another major franchise, James Bond, and taking the lead in Amazon and director Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming reboot. “I’d love to do both. I’d love to play Batman and Bond, yeah. Aim high,” he declared. Whether it’s Batman or Bond, Tom Brittney is shifting ever closer to the franchise spotlight.

The Westies is set to premiere on MGM+ on July 12, 2026.
