Shonda Rhimes expands 'Grey's Anatomy' universe with new Texas spinoff

More than 20 years after first introducing fans to the chaos of Seattle Grace Hospital, “Grey’s Anatomy” is expanding once again, this time heading far away from Seattle.

ABC has announced a brand-new Texas-set spinoff from Shonda Rhimes and current “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner Meg Marinis, who will co-create and write the upcoming medical drama.

According to reports online, the untitled series will be set at a rural medical centre in West Texas described as “the last chance for care before miles of nowhere”.

The story will centre on a team of medical professionals working in an isolated community, placing the spotlight on the realities of healthcare far from major cities.

Viewers can expect a mix of emergency medicine, personal relationships and the emotional storytelling that has become synonymous with the “Grey’s Anatomy” franchise.

The rural setting is also expected to bring a different set of challenges, from limited resources to patients who may have few healthcare options available to them.

One of the biggest differences this time around is that the show will not be built around characters fans already know.

Unlike “Private Practice”, which followed Addison Montgomery after leaving Seattle, and “Station 19”, which existed alongside the events of “Grey’s Anatomy”, the Texas-set drama is expected to introduce an entirely new group of doctors, nurses and medical staff.

Marinis, who is originally from Texas, shared how personal the project feels to her.

“I am incredibly excited to expand the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ universe. This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from ‘Grey’s’ for more than two decades – all set in my home state of Texas.

“I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it,” she added.

Ellen Pompeo, who famously played Meredith Grey for nearly two decades, is also attached to the project as an executive producer alongside Betsy Beers.

ABC has not yet revealed who will star in the series, although reports suggest the focus will be on a new ensemble cast rather than familiar faces from the original show.

The upcoming series is expected to premiere during the 2026–2027 broadcast season.

Since premiering in 2005, “Grey’s Anatomy” has become one of television’s longest-running medical dramas and remains one of ABC’s biggest franchises.

Even after multiple cast changes over the years, the series continues to dominate streaming and social media conversations, proving there is still a demand for more stories from the world of “Grey’s Anatomy”.
