DCU's Green Lantern Series Controversy Officially Addressed After Divisive First Trailer

The DC Universe audience finally gets answers to an ongoing debate about one of the franchise’s upcoming properties.

In a new interview with ComicBook, Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy finally responded to the backlash that the upcoming HBO drama has been dealing with ever since the first trailer was released. The Ozark creative was asked if it was challenging to make the show more in line with the typical HBO tone and more than just another superhero project, to which he said, “It was less challenging than it was just exciting. Our take was that we have this incredibly rich mythology within the Green Lantern canon, and we have this incredibly rich history of Sunday night HBO shows—everything from The Sopranos to Game of Thrones and in between.”

Mundy continued by adding, “The fun of it was to try to create a real, layered drama that dealt with who these characters are as human beings while still staying true to the spirit of what makes the comics so special.” For the creative team, they “wanted it to be accessible for anyone who doesn’t know the canon but, at the same time, satisfying for people who know the lore in minute detail. So, yes, it was challenging, but only in the way that the most fun things are.”

Ever since the Lanterns trailer came out, one of the biggest complaints has been the lack of Green Lantern mythology, with many feeling that the HBO adaptation is keeping it a little too grounded. A lot of frustrated audience members have commented on how it also feels weird for the superhero project not to have the word “green” in it.

It’s also key to remember that the Lanterns TV show, going with this specific title, also opens the door for future seasons to tackle other colors in the emotional spectrum. While a season 2 pickup has yet to happen, it’s worth mentioning that another run could shift the focus to other Corps from the larger DC canon. In fact, the first season will include the villainous Sinestro, who has been a primary face for the Yellow Lantern Corps (which primarily goes by Sinestro Corps) in the comics.

In Lanterns’ defense, the marketing has not been green-less, and the HBO drama is not holding back key aspects of the mythology, given how it will explore John beginning his journey as an Emerald Knight. Upcoming trailers for the show may also lean more into the space aspect that comes with the Green Lantern Corps, making this simply a matter of patience, since the series will explore the “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” has already shown that it is willing to embrace the comics when it comes to Green Lanterns through Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, who made his debut in James Gunn’s Superman movie in 2025. The Rookie lead is also set to reprise the role in Lanterns season 1, which is another sign that the franchise isn’t looking to slow down on adapting the larger mythology anytime soon.

HBO’s Lanterns is officially set to premiere on Sunday, August 16.
