Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the first teaser for Verity, its adaptation of the bestselling psychological thriller by It Ends with Us author Colleen Hoover.
The film, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, is slated to hit theaters on October 2, and follows Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling writer who is hired to complete a successful book series after its author, Verity Crawford (Hathaway), is incapacitated. Once inside the Crawford home, Lowen becomes entangled with Verity’s husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett) and uncovers an unfinished manuscript that may reveal disturbing truths about the author.
While Amazon MGM recently unveiled a trailer for the film at CinemaCon, as we reported, the teaser unveiled today is different.
It finds Lowen walking into the darkness of Verity’s home, with the author lying ill, in bed. The camera pans over to Jeremy, who promptly begins making out with Lowen with his wife in the room — and eventually, when Lowen pulls away, we see that it’s somehow Verity herself that she’s getting intimate with.
“Even with my generous warning, you’re going to continue to ingest my words,” Verity tells Lowen in the trailer. “But know one thing: there is no light where we’re going. Darkness ahead.”
Directed by Michael Showalter, a frequent hire of Amazon MGM’s who reteamed Hathaway on the heels of their rom-com The Idea of You, Verity also stars Ismael Cruz Córdova and Brady Wagner. The film is one of a number of book-to-film adaptations based on the work of BookTok phenomenon Hoover, on the heels of Sony’s It Ends with Us, which broke out as an outsized commercial success at a worldwide gross exceeding $351 million, even as a legal battle between the film’s key creatives Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni threatened to overshadow that success. Paramount followed that film up quickly with Regretting You, a Hoover adaptation starring Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco and Mason Thames, which grossed over $90 million. After that came Universal’s Reminders of Him, starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers, which did more than $84M in theaters earlier this year.
