Ameesha Patel reveals how her Lagaan casting twist and bond with Aamir Khan led to Mangal Pandey.
Actor Ameesha Patel has opened up about how she landed Mangal Pandey: The Rising, revealing that her rapport with Aamir Khan and an unexpected casting turn during Lagaan played a crucial role in the opportunity coming her way.
Aamir Khan, A BBC Interview and an Unlikely Connection
Speaking in a recent interaction, Ameesha shared that Aamir first took note of her during a BBC interview, where he was impressed by her articulation and intellect.
“Aamir actually saw an interview of mine with BBC and found me very intelligent,” she said, adding that they later bonded during a joint interaction in Delhi.
While waiting for the shoot to begin, the two struck up a conversation, even playing noughts and crosses and discussing books. That easy camaraderie, she believes, laid the foundation for their professional association.
When Ameesha Was Dropped From Lagaan
Ameesha also revealed that her connection with Aamir went back to the time she had auditioned for Lagaan and was almost finalised for the film.
“I had screen-tested for Lagaan, was selected, and had even allotted dates,” she recalled. However, while she was shooting for Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai in New Zealand, she received a call that changed things.
Director Ashutosh Gowariker felt her personality didn’t align with the role of a village girl. “He felt my eyes looked too educated, and I am also extremely fair-skinned,” she said.
Ironically, the same traits worked in her favour soon after. Ameesha pointed out that her “educated” body language helped her land Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, where she played Sakeena, a politically aware and refined character.
Looking back, she acknowledged how close she came to being part of two iconic films releasing on the same day. “Imagine, Lagaan and Gadar released together… I would have been in both,” she reflected.
Aishwarya Rai’s Exit and the Casting Shift
Before Ameesha stepped into Mangal Pandey, the role of Jwala was initially offered to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Her exit from the film had sparked considerable speculation at the time.
Addressing it in an earlier interview, Aishwarya clarified that the situation stemmed from a disagreement involving the producer and her representatives. She also revealed that the producer had apologised to her for the way the matter was handled publicly.
However, reports at the time quoted producer Bobby Bedi suggesting that the exit was linked to a fee renegotiation, claiming the actor wanted to revise her remuneration after signing the agreement.
A Role That Eventually Found Its Way to Ameesha
Following Aishwarya’s departure, Ameesha Patel was cast as the Bengali widow Jwala in Mangal Pandey: The Rising. The film, headlined by Aamir Khan, went on to become a significant project, and for Ameesha, it marked an opportunity shaped as much by timing as by her earlier association with the actor.
Her reflections now reveal how a mix of missed chances, unexpected decisions and personal equations quietly shaped one of the more interesting casting journeys in early 2000s Bollywood.
