For the last few years, Millie Bobby Brown (best known for her work on Stranger Things) has continued to work with Netflix on the Enola Holmes movies. Based on author Nancy Springer’s The Enola Holmes Mysteries, the Netflix movies feature Brown as the teenage sister of Sherlock Holmes (who is already a famous Victorian-era detective) and government official Mycroft Holmes. While the second movie was not inspired by one of Springer’s stories, it earned the same level of success as its predecessors, with both ranking as two of the biggest original film releases in Netflix’s history.
In November 2023, Netflix confirmed that this franchise would not end anytime soon, as the streamer confirmed that Enola Holmes 3 was in the early stages of development. While story details have not been revealed yet, Brown is expected to return to play the titular role for a third time; also set to come back for the new movie are Louis Partridge (Viscount Tewkesbury), Henry Cavill (Sherlock Holmes), and Himesh Patel (John Watson). While shooting for the threequel concluded nearly a year ago, only now has a release date come more into focus for Netflix.
According to What’s On Netflix, Netflix has confirmed that Enola Holmes 3 will be released on the streaming service on Jul. 1, 2026. This comes more than three and a half years after Enola Holmes 2‘s November 2022 debut and almost six full years after the original Enola Holmes premiered in September 2022. This comes on the back of the first two movies earning top-notch ratings, with the first movie earning a 91% critics score and a 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and the second earning 93% and 79%, respectively.
In Enola Holmes 2, the titular heroine followed in her brother’s footsteps and became a detective, getting hired to find a missing girl and uncovering a plot that required her to look to her friends and Sherlock for help. The film finished with Enola solving the match girl mystery and exposing Miss Troy as the mastermind, establishing her own detective agency, and deciding not to partner with her brother; she also introduced Sherlock to Dr. Watson for the first time.
For the threequel, director Philip Barantini takes over for Harry Bradbeer, who directed the first two films and will serve as a producer on the third. This new movie is also expected to be much darker in tone than the first two outings; Barantini is even taking inspiration from 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in that regard, which took things to much darker places storywise than the first two Potter movies. While more details about the film are sure to come in the next few weeks, the wait continues for any new footage or imagery to be released to the public.
Enola Holmes 3 is now expected to be released on Netflix on Jul. 1, 2026.
