Twitter/X experienced major outages in the U.S. and other parts of the world on Wednesday night.
For over an hour, the social media platform was failing to load posts on people’s timelines, both on desktop and mobile. Instead, users are met with a “Welcome to X” message on their homepage.
DownDetector, a site that provides real-time information about the status of various websites and services, has had more than 80,000 reports that Twitter/X is down in various parts of the world. The problems with the site began around 9:30 p.m. PT, according to DownDetector.
This is not the first global outage experienced by Twitter/X since it was taken over by Elon Musk. In December 2022, the site went down for several hours.
When Musk took Twitter/X over, he drastically cut the headcount at the company, with some reports suggesting he had fired 80 percent of the staff at the company. CNBC reported in January this year that the company now had fewer than 550 full-time engineers, with resources spread thin, making it harder to maintain services.
