2023 has been a rough year for Marvel Studios.
While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. and Season 2 of Loki were both huge successes for the studio, it has also seen its share of failures.
Marvel Has Had A Rough 2023
In February, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was the first real box-office bomb in MCU history. The disappointing film was then followed up by the news that Jonathan Majors, who was being set up by Marvel as the next big MCU villain Kang the Conqueror, was arrested for domestic violence.
In June, Secret Invasion was released on Disney+ to poor reviews from critics and fans alike.
Then came The Marvels. Despite the fact that the film saw Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) team up with both Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Photon (Teyonah Parris), the film had the worst opening weekend in MCU history.
With the once bulletproof Marvel Studios suddenly looking vulnerable, many have suggested that the studio would consider reviving fallen Avengers such as Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow to inject life into the struggling franchise.
Johansson Not Ruling Out a Return?
In her first interviews following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Johansson was asked about the possibility of returning to the MCU.
Interestingly, the actress did not outright shoot down the idea.
In an interview with The Today Show, Johansson joked that she could return as a zombie version of her character.
“I feel like [Avengers: Endgame] is kind of the end, right? Like, can you come back? Could it be like a vampire version of the character? Because I’m here for that. Like a zombie version, maybe,” she said.
Later, Johansson said that it would be a miracle if she returned to the MCU, but still, did not rule it out.
“It would be a miracle,” she commented. “It would be a real Marvel miracle. It would be a marvel. But, you know, who knows?”
While Johansson’s latest comments were not exactly a grand announcement that she was returning to her most iconic role, she does sound much more open to the idea.
A Change in Tone
In April 2023, she shot down the notion that she could rejoin the MCU.
“I’m done,” she said. “Chapter is over. I did all that I had to do. Also coming back and playing a character again and again, over a decade of time, is such a unique experience.”
While we may be a long way away from seeing Johansson suit up as Black Widow again, there seems to be a chance.
As a Marvel fan that is exciting.
