James Gunn’s Position as DCU Lead Gets Praise From Popular Comic Book Writer

James Gunn’s Position as DCU Lead Gets Praise From Popular Comic Book Writer

Summary

  • J.M. DeMatteis, a renowned comic book writer, supports James Gunn’s leadership in the DCU and believes he understands and respects the source material and creators.
  • The new DCU, headed by James Gunn, will include projects such as Superman: Legacy, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, and Swamp Thing.
  • The rebooted franchise will not feature the same actors from the previous Justice League and Snyderverse, which has sparked mixed reactions among fans.

A legendary comic book writer, J. M. DeMatteis, joins the long list of creatives, executives and directors celebrating the arrival of James Gunn to the DCU, placing the fanaticism of the current co-CEO of DC Studios as the key to his future success. It has been almost a year since David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, confirmed that Peter Safran and James Gunn would be in charge of directing DC Studios, a new division within the company created especially to oversee all projects related to the characters from the comic book company, whether for film or television and even video games.

Since then, a lot has changed for the franchise. Earlier this year, Safran and Gunn announced the first batch of projects that would be part of the first phase of the new DCU, a list that includes new Batman, Superman and Supergirl films, as well as series focused on the universe of Green Lantern and Booster Gold, among many others. And while the reboot will bring back some actors and characters from the previous canon, such as Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, John Cena as Peacemaker, or Xolo Marieduena as Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle, most will not be a part of it.

It was recently confirmed that none of the main heroes of the Justice League from the Snyderverse will be played by the same actors again, which means that the return of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, that of Ezra Miller as The Flash, or Jason Momoa as Aquaman is ruled out, joining Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Ray Fisher, who had already been confirmed not to return.

Zaslav’s decision to put Gunn in charge of the new universe, as well as Gunn’s decisions regarding the projects, has sparked mixed reactions. While many fans are in favor of giving the franchise a new start, others do not agree with having let go of some of the actors who were part of the previous universe. However, many artists in the world of comic books have supported Gunn, including J.M. DeMatteis.

J.M. Dematteis Met With James Gunn

J. M. DeMatteis is a popular name in the world of comic books, having worked at various companies such as Dark Horse, Marvel Comics and, of course, DC. Through Threads (via ComicBook.com), Gunn revealed that he had met with the writer, something he himself later confirmed by taking a moment to compliment Gunn’s work:

“James and I had a very nice conversation about Creature Commandos and other things…but that’s all it was: a pleasant conversation. I’m not involved in any upcoming projects. Let me add that I think the DC TV/movie universe is in great hands with James Gunn. He’s a fan. He’s understands and respects the source material and the creators.”

James Gunn’s new DCU will kick off in 2025 with the release of Superman: Legacy, a film starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. They will be joined by Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorph, Isabela Moner as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific.

Beginning with Superman: Legacy, other projects in Gunn’s DCU include The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and more.
