Emily Blunt Apologizes After Calling Server “Enormous” in Resurfaced Clip – The Hollywood Reporter

Emily Blunt is addressing a recently resurfaced video from a 2012 talk show appearance where she can be heard using “insensitive” and “hurtful” language.

In the recently discovered YouTube clip from the U.K.’s Jonathan Ross Show, the Oppenheimer actress recalls going out to eat at a restaurant during her time filming Looper in the U.S. and then refers to a restaurant server as “enormous.”

Now, Blunt is apologizing in a statement shared with People magazine. “I just need to address this head on as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12-years ago,” she wrote. “I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show.”

Her statement continued, “I’ve always considered myself someone who wouldn’t dream of upsetting anyone so whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognizable to me or anything I stand for. And yet it happened, and I said it and I’m so sorry for any hurt caused. I was absolutely old enough to know better.”

In the video circulating online, Blunt can be heard talking with host Jonathan Ross about one time when she ate dinner at a Chili’s restaurant while filming for the Rian Johnson-directed film. Ross proceeds to respond, “If you go to Chili’s you can see why so many of our American friends are enormous.”

Blunt added, “Well the girl who was serving me was enormous.” She also noted that the server recognized her while she was at the restaurant.

The Edge of Tomorrow actress starred alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Paul Dano in Looper, which was released in 2012.
