Ever since the release of Thor in 2011, the God of Thunder’s trusty hammer Mjolnir has been one of the most iconic weapons in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Over the last decade, fans have come to love Mjolnir, and the hammer has been a part of some of the franchise’s most iconic moments.
As it turns out, however, Thor director Kenneth Branagh almost changed the legendary hammer’s name.
Kenneth Branagh’s Objection
In the upcoming book MCU; The Reign of Marvel Studios, Thor writer Zack Stentz recalled a memorable exchange between Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and Branagh during Thor’s development.
“One of my most vivid memories of those notes sessions was Branagh didn’t like the name Mjölnir because it’s difficult to pronounce,” Stentz said. “He turned to all of us and asked, ‘Do we have to call the hammer ‘Mjölnir’? I see that it’s made out of some metal called ‘Uru.’ Could we call it Uru instead? Or would the fanboys string me up?’”
Stentz recalled, “[Feige] just gave his little half-smile: ‘Ken, the fanboys would string you up.’” Branagh acquiesced. “‘Alright. We won’t be doing that, then.’”
Marvel’s Recipe For Sucess
In the end, Feige’s instincts were right. By staying true to things like Mjolnir’s name, the MCU was able to toe the line and keep comic book fans engaged with the films. The melding of die-hard Marvel fans with more casual movie-goers would propel the MCU to unprecedented levels of success and usher in the era of the superhero movie.
