My Adventures with Superman is making sure it does not repeat a DCEU mistake from seven years ago. Henry Cavill debuted as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, with director Zack Snyder’s movie setting up the DCEU. Several mistakes were made when it came to Henry Cavill’s Superman over the years, both on camera and behind the scenes, due in part to DC executives not affording Snyder the time to properly get Clark Kent from a darker point in his life to his hopeful self from the comics, and 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was responsible for one of the DCEU movies biggest mistakes.
Now, the DCEU will get rebooted with James Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe, which will repeat the prior cinematic universe’s decision to kick things off with a Superman movie. David Corenswet is set to star as Clark Kent in 2025’s Superman: Legacy movie, with the DC Universe’s own creative chief, Gunn, serving as the film’s writer and director, showing how important Superman is to DC. Before Superman: Legacy comes around, the animated My Adventures with Superman is already proving that the franchise has learned from its seven-year-old mistake.
My Adventures With Superman Is Actively Avoiding Crossovers & Cameos
Speaking with Superman Homepage, My Adventures with Superman producer Josephine Campbell ruled out Batman showing up in season 2, eliminating one of the big My Adventures with Superman season 2 theories.
While the producer mentioned that she is excited for the Dark Knight’s upcoming animated series — Batman: Caped Crusader — Campbell made it clear that Batman is not part of the My Adventures with Superman team’s plan for the series, saying, “this is a Superman show. We have brought in some other characters… Vicki’s from Gotham, there’s some mentions of Gotham. But, for us, the whole point of this is, it’s about Superman.” Check out the full exchange below:
SH: “Now, as soon as the word or the title, ‘Gotham Gazette,’ got thrown up, fans online jump straight to, ‘Batman, Batman, Batman.’ As a Superman fan, I’ve got nothing against Batman, but as a Superman fan, please tell me we’re going to be concentrating on Superman in Season 2…”
Campbell: “Oh yeah.”
SH: “… Not going down that road of bringing in Batman and necessarily other characters along the line?”
Campbell: “I mean, this is a Superman show. We have brought in some other characters, like you said, Vicki’s from Gotham, there’s some mentions of Gotham. But, for us, the whole point of this is, it’s about Superman. It’s about Lois, and Jimmy, and the focus is always going to be on them. We love Superman so much. I’m excited to see [Batman:] Caped Crusader when that comes out. Definitely, there’s still going to be some more mentions of Gotham, so keep an eye out. But, at the end of the day, Superman is our hero. Superman and Clark are who we love the most. And it’s who we’ve spent a couple of years writing now, so it’s what we love.”
Based on Campbell’s words, My Adventures with Superman season 2 will not only be missing Batman when it premieres, but the animated series should also not feature any other DC hero that isn’t Superman in its second season, and likely beyond. My Adventures with Superman didn’t feel like it was lacking in any way without other DC heroes, with the show making up for it by bringing in new takes on iconic villains, including a younger version of Deathstroke. By keeping its focus on Superman and not bringing in other DC heroes, My Adventures with Superman avoids a mistake that the DCEU made with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
How DC’s Rushed Crossovers Hurt The DCEU
The Marvel Cinematic Universe succeeded due to its careful effort to build out its world and heroes before they crossed over in The Avengers. The DCEU, however, took a different approach. After Man of Steel, DC opted not to have Ben Affleck’s Batman debut in a solo movie, but rather fighting Cavill’s Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Having its two most popular heroes spend most of their first time together on the big screen trading blows was not the best choice to prepare for a future team-up, arguably sabotaging the overall franchise.
Adding to that, the DCEU deciding to rush the debut of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman in a supporting role – as well as the rest of Justice League‘s cast through short videos Diana watches – in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice actively hurt the DCEU’s structure. Thankfully, My Adventures with Superman has its focus clear on taking the time to properly build Clark’s world and its characters, even waiting to introduce Superman’s iconic nemesis Lex Luthor, which shows that My Adventures with Superman has learned from DC’s past mistake.
