Steven DeKnight, who served as the showrunner on the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil, took to social media to blast Disney for “running a scam” when it comes to the upcoming reboot series Daredevil: Born Again.
For those who don’t know, Daredevil originally ran on Netflix from 2015 through 2018. The series started with Charlie Cox as the titular hero.
While the canon status of the original series is unclear, Disney is bringing many of Daredevil‘s characters into the new Marvel Cinematic Universe show, including Cox’s Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher.
“It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to the first season,” DeKnight wrote on X. “Needs to be addressed by all the guilds/unions and crushed!”
Disney Has Been Accused of Manipulating Shows Before
Disney has previously been accused of changing the names of its television series in order to reset contracts.
Just last month, former Liv and Maddie star Joey Bragg accused Disney of changing their Disney Channel show titles after three seasons to avoid paying more.
“Yeah, like Hannah Montana Forever and Suite Life On Deck,” Joey replied. “They have a deal with, I don’t know if it’s the unions or the AMPTP, but they had a deal where the first three seasons of a show, you get paid 88% of scale. So it’s 88% of like minimum wage, pretty much, for the crew, and then the idea is, you work on a show, it becomes popular, you go four, five, six seasons, and you get 100%, or whatever that is.”
“But then, they, by the third season, even if the show’s popular, they reboot it as a brand new show,” he explained. “So, we were Liv and Maddie for the first three seasons, and the last season was Liv and Maddie: Cali Style.”
DeKnight Won’t Recieve Compensation
In his social media posts on Tuesday, DeKnight accused Disney of a similar practice when it comes to Daredevil.
“From what I understand, I’m not going to see a penny from ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ because they added the ‘Born Again’ and can claim it’s a completely different show,” he explained. “You know, with the exact same two lead actors (who I love!) playing Daredevil and Fisk.”
Despite his gripe with Disney, DeKnight had nothing but good things to say about the Daredevil stars.
“To be clear, I can’t wait to see Charlie Cox and the amazing Vincent D’Onofrio reprise their iconic roles,” DeKnight wrote. “But to claim this is a complete reboot and you don’t have to pay the original creatives is some corporate shenanigans, to say the least.”
Daredevil: Born Again was originally slated to premiere in 2024, but the show has been indefinitely delayed due to the ongoing Hollywood strikes.
