On August 28, 2020, the world was shocked to learn the news that Chadwick Boseman had passed away.
The famed actor had risen to prominence playing historical figures such as Jackie Robinson, James Brown, and Thurgood Marshall, before he rocked to superstardom after his performance as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Chadwick’s performance as King T’Challa in Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Avengers: Endgame, and Avengers: Infinity War was lauded by fans and critics alike, and the actor appeared to be the new face of the MCU.
Unknown to almost everyone, however, was the fact that Boseman had been diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, which eventually progressed to stage IV before 2020.
Because Boseman chose to keep his diagnosis private, his death came as a shock to not only his fans but also many of his friends and co-stars.
Lupita Nyong’o Pays Tribute To Boseman
On the anniversary of Boseman’s death, his Black Panther co-star Lupita Nyong’o wrote a tribute to her friend that spoke to the feelings of pain, confusion, and loss that many felt that day.
“Three years ago today, I experienced a singular pain at the news of Chadwick Boseman’s death. The confusion was so profound that it took months to trust the feeling of joy again,” Nyong’o wrote.
“Death is hard to understand, maybe even harder to accept,” she continued. “But the love generated from the life he lived will fuel every anniversary marking his absence. Chadwick may no longer be in our photos, but he will always be in our hearts.”
“Honoring What He Started”
This is not the first time that Nyong’o has talked about the loss of Chadwick Boseman. Leading up to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she talked about how Boseman’s death was “still extremely raw” when filming the Black Panther sequel.

“But at the same time we have a leader in [writer-director] Ryan [Coogler], who feels very much like we do, who feels the loss in a very, very real way as well,” she added at the time. “And his idea, the way which he has reshaped the second movie is so respectful of the loss we’ve all experienced as a cast and as a world.”

“So it feels spiritually and emotionally correct to do this,” she continued. “And hopefully, what I do look forward to, is getting back together and honoring what he started with us and holding his light through it. Because he left us a lot of light that we’re still going to be bathing in. I know that for sure.”
