Elon Musk Announces Daily Twitter Limitations as Thousands Report Problems Seeing Tweets

Following a ton of reports from users saying they can’t see new Tweets and are being greeted by a “Rate limit exceeded” error message, Elon Musk has announced new daily Twitter limitations that include allowing unverified users to only read 600 posts per day.

Musk took to Twitter to share the news, saying these “temporary limits” are to “address extreme levels of data scarping & system manipulation.” In addition to limiting unverified accounts to “600 posts/day,” new unverified accounts will only be able to read 300 posts per day.

If you are a verified Twitter Blue account, however, you will be able to read 6,000 posts per day.

Musk gave no further clarification or timetable, but this change has already caused thousands of people to report outages as they are not able to see new Tweets and are getting the previously mentioned “rate limit exceeded” error message.

According to DownDetector.com, there have been over 1,000 reports of Twitter outages since 4am PT/7am ET this morning, July 1, and the number has continued to be well over 1,000, with its peak reaching 7,483 at 8:14am PT/11:14am ET.

My Twitter account is no longer verified and I am not subscribed to Twitter Blue, and I can barely use Twitter on my iPhone without being given the error message you can see below. It appears to work a little better on desktop at the moment, but that could change at any moment.

This is just another chapter in Elon Musk’s Twitter buyout saga, which all began back when he offered to buy Twitter for $44 billion in April 2022. This move also follows Twitter’s new decision to require users to sign in to even view tweets.
