Legacy Is Skipping Clark Kent’s Origin Story

James Gunn elaborates on why Superman: Legacy will not feature Clark Kent’s origin story for the DC Universe reboot. The DCEU is finishing its run after ten years to pave the way for the new DC Universe from DC Studios, with Gunn and Peter Safran running it as co-CEOs. Superman: Legacy will properly be the film to kick off Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” with several other DC Universe movies and shows also currently in development.

While Superman: Legacy will be a fresh start for the Man of Steel, Gunn has previously talked about not doing a Superman origin story. The CEO (via @HomeOfDCU) has now expanded on why they are not focusing on telling Clark’s backstory in the movie, as he took to Bluesky to disclose more thoughts on the matter.

This comes shortly after DC Studios made it official that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. Superman: Legacy, which still has several other characters left to cast, is currently on track to start shooting in 2024.

How Skipping Clark Kent’s Origin Story Helps Superman: Legacy Standout

When it comes to Superman’s origin story, his journey to becoming a superhero has, without a doubt, been retold several times more than most DC characters. Superman: The Movie and Man of Steel both explored how Clark discovered his Kryptonian heritage and became the world’s greatest protector. But in general, Superman’s origin story is also, at this point, so well-known that it doesn’t really benefit Superman: Legacy to have to find another way of retelling it.

There is also the fact that Smallville, a show which ran for a full decade, also focused on exploring how Clark became Superman. With various live-action Superman movies and TV shows having already gone as deep as they can with Clark’s days before becoming a superhero, Superman: Legacy is clearly taking some inspiration from The Batman and Superman & Lois, which both focus on the heroes already being established.

However, that doesn’t mean that Superman: Legacy can’t reference things that happened in Clark’s life before he suited up. Future Superman: Legacy sequels could also potentially include flashbacks if there are crucial moments from Clark’s life that serve more of a purpose for the DC Universe. Hopefully, Gunn will have more details to share about Superman: Legacy and where he is taking the reboot sooner rather than later.
