In many ways, 2018’s Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” changed what an animated superhero film could be. With its groundbreaking visuals and dense story, the film was a hit with audiences and critics alike.

Now, Miles Morales and his fellow Spider-People are gearing up to return to movie theaters for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”.

Swinging Towards A Strong Debut

While the initial film was a sleeper hit, propelled by good reviews and strong word-of-mouth, the sequel is arriving with pomp and fanfare. “Across the Spider-Verse” is currently tracking toward an $80 million debut this weekend, which would easily eclipse the $35.4 million” Into the Spider-Verse” brought in during its first weekend.

Some rival studios believe the film could beat its projections and reach the $90 million threshold or higher.

The determining factor in “Across the Spider-Verse’s” success may well depend on how well “The Little Mermaid” holds up in its second weekend.

Rob Marshall’s take on the Disney animated classic brought in $117.5 million over the four-day holiday weekend. The film is currently looking at a sophomore weekend of roughly $40 million, which would represent a drop of just under 60%. If the film over-performs those projections, it could steal some of Spider-Man’s family audience.

High Expectations

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was produced by Sony Pictures for $100 million. A relatively low number in today’s animated film environment, the film should have no trouble recouping Sony’s investment.

The film follows Miles Morales as he teams up with Gwen Stacy to try and save his fellow Spider-Men from a supervillain called the Spot. The film once again stars Shameik Moore as Miles, along with Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen. Other cast members include Brian Tyree Henry, Issa Rae, Jason Schwartzman, and Oscar Isaac.
