Florence Pugh Says She Received Backlash For Joining The MCU

One of the bright spots of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 was the introduction of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova.

Originally appearing in 2021’s Black Widow, Belova is the adopted sister of Natasha Romanov and a fellow spy.

The introduction of Yelena not only allowed Marvel to flesh out Black Widow’s backstory, but it introduced the world to another superhero.

Pugh would go on to represent her role as Yelena in the Disney+ series Hawkeye and is set to appear again in 2024’s Thunderbolts.

Backlash From Her Peers

While Pugh’s take on Yelena Belova was widely praised by critics and fans alike, it turns out that the actor received a lot of backlash from her peers in the indie film industry.

For those who don’t know, Pugh rose to fame through her work in popular indie films such as Lady Macbeth, Midsommar, and The Wonder.

In a recent interview, Pugh revealed that her jump into blockbuster films was derided by those within the indie film community.

“So many people in the indie film world were really [ticked] off at me. They were like, ‘Great, now she’s gone forever,’” Pugh told Time magazine.

The Best of Both Worlds

According to Pugh, however, that is not the case.

“And I’m like, no, I’m working as hard as I used to work. I’ve always done back-to-back movies. It’s just people are watching them now. You just have to be a bit more organized with your schedule,” she said.

Since joining the MCU, Pugh has still maintained a strong presence in independent filmmaking. In fact, her latest role was in the Zach Braff drama A Good Person, opposite Morgan Freeman.

All in all, it seems like fears of Pugh leaving the indie world altogether can be put to rest.
