Warworld Gets R Rating For Bloody Violence

The animated Justice League: Warworld movie nabs an R-rating. The upcoming film will be the first focused on the Justice League in DC’s current Tomorrowverse continuity. The film brings back actors from previous Tomorrowverse projects. Justice League: Warworld‘s cast includes DC’s Trinity, with Darren Criss as Superman, Jensen Ackles as Batman, and Stana Katic as Wonder Woman. The movie is set to premiere in 2023, although no date has been confirmed so far.

Bloody Disgusting first reported the news that Justice League: Warworld received an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association. According to the MPA, the reason given for the R-rating was “some bloody violence.” Justice League: Warworld‘s R-rating is not the first in DC’s Tomorrowverse. Ackles’ Batman: The Long Halloween – Part 2 was also rated R.

Why Justice League: Warworld Being Rated R Makes Sense

Many Justice League: Warworld story details have yet to be revealed; however, the movie will focus on the comic book storyline that saw DC’s heroes sent to the alien mobile planet known as Warworld. In the comics, Warworld is a hyper-violent planet that is home to the universe’s worst killers. Gladiatorial combats are Warworld’s favorite practice, with fights always ending up bloody, which justifies Justice League: Warworld‘s R-rating.

Warworld is controlled by the brutal villain Mongul, with actor Robin Atkin Downes playing the powerful alien in the animated movie. Mongul is going to be a formidable foe to the Tomorrowverse heroes, with the alien most likely the one who teleported Batman and Superman to Warworld at the end of the latest Tomorrowverse release, Legion of Super-Heroes.

Justice League: Warworld will see the heroes have to band together with Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, and more as they try to free the innocents who are governed by Mongul’s regime on the planet. The Tomorrowverse heroes will leave the conflict as the newly founded Justice League, with the upcoming Justice League: Warworld animated film likely only the first for the team in the new DC animated continuity.
