For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Marvel and James Gunn have cooked up something special.
In order to take advantage of the multiple aspect ratios in today’s cinemas, James Gunn created 600 multiple versions of the upcoming film to fit different theater configurations.

The Best Possible Theater Experience
According to Evan Jacobs, Disney’s vp of finishing and stereo, by having different versions of the film, theater goers will get the best experience possible.
The film will “give every exhibitor in the United States and in most international territories [the ability to] maximize their screen size for the audience. So wherever you go to see it, you’re gonna see the best version,” He said.

According to Disney, beyond just catering the format of each theater’s screens, the film will actually change ratios depending on the action on screen.
“Then on top of that, because [Gunn’s] got this extra real estate, he’s essentially said, ‘I’m gonna pop in and out creatively [and you’ll] suddenly see something more immersive and bigger, that’s going to fill your screen,’” notes Jacobs.
In the end, Gunn’s goal is to improve the storytelling process through different aspect ratios.
“Aspect ratio is something that James has really enjoyed being part of the storytelling process,” Jacobs relates.
A New Record For Marvel
While some Marvel movies have already had as many as 500 versions, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will take things up another level, bringing that number to over 600.
When asked about the difficulties involved in completing that many versions of the film on a tight schedule, Jacobs admits it is difficult.

“Marvel has almost become legendary in the postproduction community for pushing pretty hard on deadlines and kind of waiting till the last minute to make the movie as great as we could possibly make it. [But] the movie was pretty solid. It was the movie he was gonna make at the beginning. … We didn’t have to chase a lot of crazy, and the visual effects landed in a rational, sane way. We’ve all been just like pinching ourselves.”
Luckily, in some ways, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is following in Avatar: The Way of Water’s footsteps. For that film, James Cameron and Jon Landau created an unprecedented 1,065 versions.
Jacobs says Disney distribution partners were “incredible” and “the fact that Avatar [The Way of Water] had sort of done something like this recently meant they were ready to go.”
