Gamora Almost Died Before Infinity War In Alternate Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Plan Reveals James Gunn

Gamora was supposed to die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and not in Avengers: Infinity War, director James Gunn reveals. Zoe Saldana debuts Thanos’ favorite adopted daughter in the original Guardians of the Galaxy film. She is now set to go on what could be her final mission with her fellow cosmic heroes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Had things turned out differently, however, Saldana could have only played Gamora two times. In a new interview with ComicBook, Gunn reveals his plan to kill her in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This would have significantly changed Joe and Anthony Russo’s story for Avengers: Infinity War. Read Gunn’s full quote below:

“So things always change and you never know. But Gamora almost died in ‘Vol. 2.’ I knew from the beginning Zoe only wanted to play the character for so many years, and she’s been very honest saying that she’s done [after ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’]. And so I was going to have her die.”

Will Gamora Survive Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

2023 marks Avengers: Infinity War‘s 5th anniversary, and yet, it remains to be one of the MCU’s most impactful stories. It’s difficult to imagine what the film would have looked like without Thanos and Gamora’s dynamic. Aside from her death playing a pivotal role in the story’s main conflict, her involvement somehow grounded the Titan. It humanized him, thus making him more than a one-dimensional ruthless villain.

Gunn’s reasoning for wanting to kill off Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 raises questions about her future in the MCU. If Saldana has been open about playing the character for only a limited number of years, it’s possible that the hero meets her end in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. For what it’s worth, Gunn has been upfront about the threequel featuring one or two major deaths. It makes sense if one of those is Gamora.

Overall, Yondu making the sacrifice in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 works better overall. His demise ties into Peter Quill’s issues about clamoring for his father, Ego the Living the Planet’s love. Meanwhile, the Russos are able to lean on Thanos’ humanity through Gamora. It also leads to Star-Lord’s infamous meltdown in Avengers: Infinity War.
