With the Secret Wars on the horizon, Marvel has the opportunity bring back almost any MCU character they like, at least from a narrative perspective.
Now that the multiverse in full swing, fans have long hoped that previously deceased (or decommissioned) heroes like Tony Stark, Black Widow, and Steve Rogers could return into the MCU fold.

While speculation continues to increase that Robert Downey Jr. could make his triumphant return to the MCU, at least one actor will not be returning- Scarlett Johansson.
Johansson made her MCU debut as Black Widow in Iron Man 2, before starring in all four of the Avengers films. Although Black Widow sacrificed herself to save the universe in Avengers: Endgame, Johansson reprised her role in 2021’s Black Widow.
Johansson Says She’s ‘Done’.
During an interview with fellow MCU star Gwyneth Paltrow on The Goop Podcast however, Johansson said her days of playing Black Widow are over.
“I’m done,” Johansson said. “Chapter is over. I kind of did all that I had to do. Also, coming back and playing a character again and again like that, over a decade of time, is such a unique experience.”

Despite her insistence that she was done playing superhero, Johansson had nothing but good things to say about her time with Marvel, and the studio’s head Kevin Feige.
“Doing Avengers was so much fun. I was like 26 years old. I was single, it was fun,” she said.

When it came to Feige, Paltrow and Johansson agreed, that he is good at creating Marvel’s grand narratives.

“He’s such a lover of cinema, storytelling. He really is a fan,” she said.
Could Paltrow Return?
While it doesn’t sound like Johansson has any plans on ever returning to Marvel, Paltrow seemed open to the idea.

“I think so. I mean, I didn’t die so they can always ask me,” Paltrow said.
Johansson for her part, thinks that Paltrow will be back.

“I think you may come back at some point,” Johansson told Paltrow.
Paltrow quickly quipped, “Really? A 64-year-old Pepper Potts? How great.”

While it is certainly disappointing for some Marvel fans that Johansson has ruled out a return, it is good to her the actress enjoyed her time in the MCU, especially after her conflict with Disney over the release of Black Widow.
