After closing out the first weekend of Coachella 2023, Frank Ocean will not return as the Sunday headliner of the California festival’s second weekend. Though it doesn’t appear that there’s a direct replacement for him, Blink-182 will now perform on the main stage on Sunday night at 9:20 p.m., after playing on a side stage last Friday. After them is an as-yet-unannounced act that’ll take the stage at 10:25 p.m., the festival revealed in its full weekend two schedule.
Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, and Travis Barker reunited for a set announced just one day before they appeared at Coachella on Friday, April 14. It was their first performance with the classic lineup since DeLonge departed the band in 2015. They performed, among other songs, “What’s My Age Again?,” “I Miss You,” their new single “Edging,” and a mash-up of “No Scrubs” and “Dammit.”
Blink-182 were originally slated to begin a tour in March across South America, but they were forced to postpone those appearances after Travis Barker sustained an injury that required surgery on his finger. The band’s North American tour is currently scheduled to begin in May with dates alongside Turnstile.
Frank Ocean’s camp said he was forced to cancel the weekend two performance on the advice of his doctor due to two fractures and a sprain in his left leg. “It was chaotic,” Ocean said in a statement. “There is some beauty in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show but I did enjoy being out there and I’ll see you soon.”
The news followed reports that overall production of Ocean’s headlining set was altered due to an ankle injury; a pair of ice skaters also seemed to confirm rumors of a scrapped ice rink component. Ocean’s set was one of very few that didn’t appear on the festival’s YouTube livestream, and it ended somewhat abruptly with an address to the crowd: “Guys, I’m being told it’s curfew, so that’s the end of the show. Thank you so much.” (Coachella was ultimately fined for breaking curfew on all three of the festival’s nights.)
Ocean’s performance last week was his first since 2017. He was announced as a headliner for Coachella 2020 before the festival was canceled for two years in a row due to the pandemic. In 2021, the festival revealed that Ocean would headline the 2023 edition instead of returning for a set in 2022.
