As layoffs continue to hit the Walt Disney Company, we are starting to see the loss of some of the company’s more peripheral services.
Earlier this month came the news that Disney was cutting its metaverse division, and eliminating Marvel Entertainment.

Now, Marvel has announced that the brand’s Marvel Comics app will be shutting down.
What Was The Marvel Comics App?
The Marvel Comics app allowed users to purchase digital versions of the newest Marvel comics on the the day they were released.

The app, which was run by Comixology, was a way for comic book fans to pick up their favorite books, directly from Marvel.
With the loss of the app, readers will be unable to buy directly from the publisher, at least for the being.

What Happens to Previously Purchased Books?
For users who have already amassed a library of digital comics on the app, have no fear. Marvel will be transferring user’s comics to the Marvel Unlimited app.

“While we are disappointed fans will no longer be able to use the app starting in June, we know many readers have built up incredible digital libraries of Marvel comics on the app,” Marvel said in a statement Wednesday. “To support our loyal fans, we will be making digital comics purchases made prior to May 2 on the Marvel Comics app (operated by Comixology) available and accessible on the Marvel Unlimited app. No Marvel Unlimited subscription purchase will be required to access your previous digital comic library.”
Now What?
Readers will still be able to purchase new releases in the Marvel Comics app through May 2. At that time the purchasing feature will be shut down, although libraries will remain available until June 2.

After June 2, in order to access their libraries, users will have to create a Marvel Unlimited account. They will not however, need to purchase a subscription.
For now at least, it doesn’t look like users will be able to purchase new books through Marvel Unlimited. In their release, Marvel noted that new books can be purchased through Amazon.
