Open Road has unveiled a new trailer for its Gerard Butler-led action thriller Kandahar, which is slated for a Memorial Day weekend release on May 26th.
The film reteaming Butler with director Ric Roman Waugh on the heels of their work together on Lionsgate’s 2019 action-thriller Angel Has Fallen and STXfilms’ 2020 action-thriller Greenland finds undercover CIA operative Tom Harris (Butler) stuck deep in hostile territory in Afghanistan. After his mission is exposed, he must fight his way out, alongside his Afghan translator, to an extraction point in Kandahar, all whilst avoiding elite enemy forces and foreign spies tasked with hunting them down.
Mitchell LaFortune and Waugh penned the script for the pic also starring Navid Negahban (The Cleaning Lady), Ali Fazal (Death on the Nile), Travis Fimmel (Raised by Wolves) and Elnaaz Norouzi (Tehran). Producers on the project included Basil Iwanyk, Brendon Boyea, Erica Lee, Butler, Alan Siegel, Christian Mercuri, Ali Jaafar and Scott LaStaiti.
Kandahar‘s competition in its opening weekend at the box office includes Sony’s action-comedy The Machine based on the famed stand-up bit from Bert Kreischer, as well as Lionsgate’s comedy About My Father with Robert De Niro and Sebastian Maniscalco, A24’s dramedy You Hurt My Feelings reteaming filmmaker Nicole Holofcener with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Disney’s new live-action take on The Little Mermaid.
