DAISY JONES & THE SIX

Section: Featured Session

Logline: The Daisy Jones & The Six Cast and Creators Join Josh Horowitz to discuss the making of the Prime Video series. Based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daisy Jones & The Six is a limited musical-drama series detailing the rise and precipitous fall of a renowned rock band. In 1977, Daisy Jones & The Six were on top of the world. Fronted by two charismatic lead singers—Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin)—the band had risen from obscurity to fame. And then, after a sold-out show at Chicago’s Soldier Field, they called it quits. Now, decades later, the band members finally agree to reveal the truth. This is the story of how an iconic band imploded at the height of its powers.

Panelists: Nabiyah Be, Sam Claflin, Josh Whitehouse, and Sebastian Chacon

Premiered: March 3, 2023, on Prime Video

Nabiyah Be

Key Quote: Nabiyah Be: “I’m not part of the band but I would say that Simone is probably one of the most expanded characters from book to screen. Building her as a human being, there was a lot of back and forth. And musically, for me, it was making sure [Simone] didn’t sound too much like me, especially in the first song…I made sure she was authentic to the singers of the time, soul and disco singers of the time. She goes through a lot navigating the industry as a Black queer woman, and she gets to show some of the harshest realities that Black queer musicians went through at the time.”

The Deadline Studio at SXSW runs March 10-13, where the cast and creatives behind the best and buzziest titles in this year’s lineup sit down with Deadline’s festival team to discuss their movies and the paths they took to get to Austin, Texas.
