Disney CEO Bob Iger Discusses Future of Marvel Cinematic Universe

During a Q&A session at Morgan Stanley’s Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, Disney CEO Bob Iger answered some burning questions.

From the parks to Star Wars to streaming and more, Iger discussed the future of The Walt Disney Company during his two-year return to the role as CEO, and part of this conversation also addressed the future of Marvel.

The Future of Marvel

When it comes to Marvel, Disney is questioning the necessity of multiple sequels. Iger said, “There’s 7,000 characters, there are a lot more stories to tell.”

While sequels typically do well for Marvel content, Iger said that the company is thinking about “the volume of Marvel storytelling” and “how many times we go back to the well on certain characters.”

Instead of developing third and fourth (or more) films starring the same characters, they’re considering whether it’s “time to turn to other characters.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe recently entered Phase Five with the film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and prior to that were multiple characters who received quite a few sequels and spin-offs.

Considering the eventual box office performance of Quantumania, it may be safe to say that some Marvel characters are reaching a level of saturation, and introducing new characters into the mix could rejuvenate the brand.

Moving forward, we expect to see more new Marvel characters and fewer sequels, which also means you may not get to know the characters as well as before.

Next to be released is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the third film of the Guardians of the Galaxy series, followed by The MarvelsCaptain America: New World OrderThunderbolts, and Blade.
