Nicolas Cage Says He Doesn’t Need the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Nicolas Cage is no stranger to superhero films. The veteran actor first entered the comic book world in 2007 when he starred as Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider.

The pre-MCU Marvel film was full of action, and Cage’s (somewhat campy) performance was well received. The film even did well enough to spawn the sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, in 2012.

When that movie flopped, however, Cage stated he was done playing Ghost Rider.

A Turn As Spider-Man

Cage’s more recent foray into Marvel’s lore still existed outside of the MCU. In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Cage voiced Spider-Man Noir, a black-and-white version of the hero from the 1930s. Cage’s performance, and the film in general, were lauded by critics.

The actor’s past experience working with Marvel has led many to wonder if he could find himself joining the MCU at some point.

Cage’s View On Super Hero Movies

When receiving the Variety Legend & Groundbreaker Award at the Miami Film Festival, however, the actor didn’t seem thrilled with the current state of superhero movies.

“I’ve gotta be nice about Marvel movies, because I named myself after a Stan Lee character named Luke Cage. What am I going to do, put Marvel movies down? Stan Lee is my surrealistic father. He named me,” he said when asked about the state of superhero movies today.

“I understand what the frustration is. I get it. But I think there’s plenty of room for everybody. I’m seeing movies like ‘Tár.’ I’m seeing all kinds of artistic and independently driven movies. I think there’s plenty of room for everybody.”

While Cage took a diplomatic approach in his response, he clearly wasn’t thrilled at the prospect of joining the MCU.

“I’m Nic Cage”

In fact, when asked more directly if he wanted to join the ever-expanding universe, Cage was blunt.

“I don’t need to be in the MCU, I’m Nic Cage.”

So there you have it, it doesn’t sound like Marvel fans can expect to see Nicolas Cage suiting up anytime soon.

Nevertheless, a reappearance of Cage’s Ghost Rider during Secret Wars would be just the plot device needed to add the legendary actor into the fold. I guess we will have to wait and see.
