The latest android you love to fear is still killing them at the box office.
The first horror hit of 2023–the Blumhouse/Atomic Monster smash M3GAN–had fans lining during its second weekend, according to a report on Deadline. The feature once again placed second only to the Avatar sequel juggernaut at the domestic box office.
M3GAN is projected to earn more than $21 million for the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, bringing its 11-day running total to nearly $60 million. Not too shabby for a film that cost just $12 million to make.
The killer doll pic–directed by Gerard Johnstone from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (drawing on a James Wan original story)–follows Gemma (Allison Williams), a toy company roboticist who uses artificial intelligence to create M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android)–a lifelike doll that’s programmed to be “a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally,” according to the synopsis.
But, when Gemma gets custody of her orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw), the bloody body count starts to climb as the android becomes “increasingly more independent and violent towards anyone who poses a threat to Cady.”
The cast is rounded out by Ronny Chieng, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Lori Dungey and Stephanie Garneau-Moriten.
Not surprisingly, a sequel is already in the early development stage, so keep reading Horror News Network for all updates on M3GAN.
