‘The Take’: Wolverine In ‘Deadpool 3’; Jeffrey Dahmer Series Backlash

Ryan Reynolds casually broke the internet this week when he announced that Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in “Deadpool 3.” How does it affect the events of “Logan” (2017), and what can we expect when it hits theaters?

“The Woman King” from Gina Prince-Bythewood and “Don’t Worry Darling” from Olivia Wilde dominated the box office for two weekends in a row. In the case of Bythewood’s historical epic, critical acclaim and lots of Oscar buzz are surrounding the Viola Davis-starring vehicle. In addition, the first “Avatar” racked up more than $30 million globally during its return to theaters, hinting at the domination the upcoming sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” will have when it drops in December. Can James Cameron’s return dethrone Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick” as the highest-grossing film of the year, and possibly one of the highest of all-time (again)?

Netflix removed the LGBTQ tag from its Ryan Murphy-created Jeffrey Dahmer limited series, “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” after receiving backlash from social media users and influencers. The convicted serial killer was even trending on TikTok, with creators commenting on his appearance, while others are condemning such behavior.

Finally, Variety’s annual Power of Women event took place honoring the women who graced the covers of the magazine — Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey, Elizabeth Olsen, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, and Malala. What were the best moments from the night?

Hosted by Variety chief correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister and senior awards editor Clayton Davis, Variety’s “The Take,” presented by Apple TV+, is a weekly series that navigates the week’s top stories from entertainment, pop culture and media, while providing expert analysis and exclusive insight on what’s buzzing in Hollywood. Filmed in Variety’s state-of-the-art studio in Los Angeles, new episodes are released on Fridays on Variety.com, YouTube and social media.

Make sure to let us know … what’s your take?
