DC’s New ‘Superman’ Spin-Off Officially Hits a Major Milestone Ahead of 2027 Debut

James Gunn’s DCU continues to expand its eclectic slate with a spin-off that is as refreshing as it is baffling, even to those familiar with the source material. Given Gunn’s proven knack for elevating lesser-known comic book characters, it is entirely on-brand for him to subvert audience expectations, this time with a comedy centered on a major DC villain. Production on the ambitious series has rapidly ramped up since it was greenlit last August, and the series has now crossed a crucial milestone.

The DCU debuted Jimmy Olsen in 2025’s Superman, casting Skyler Gisondo in yet another career-defining role. Per Gunn’s original plans to have the same actors play their characters’ live-action and animated versions, Gisondo is expected to reprise his role in the foreseeable future, starting with the upcoming The People v. Gorilla Grodd, an eight-episode true-crime mockumentary focused on the titular Big Bad. And while the show is anticipated to release in 2027 after Man of Tomorrow, Gisondo shared an exciting update with Collider, confirming the project’s progress is on track.

Gorilla Grodd DC Comics

“We’re done. We just wrapped a couple of weeks ago, and…yeah. It’s in the can, man.”

The actor was understandably restrained when pressed for details outside of what’s already confirmed, including Jimmy Tatro’s casting as Gorilla Grodd, and co-stars Beck Bennett, Milkaela Hoover, and Wendell Pierce reprising their roles as Steve Lombard, Cat Grant, and Perry White from Superman, respectively. Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz also complete the lineup. Gisondo did praise series creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yascenda for their unique contribution to Gunn’s DC Universe.

“I can say it’s Dan Perrault and Tony Yascenda who are so brilliant, some of my favorite writers and filmmakers… They did, like, American Vandal, which is such a lights-out show, that first season’s like ten out of ten. They were the perfect guys for the job. This is like an approach to this world that we have not seen. I’m excited to see how it all shapes up.”

The People v. Gorilla Grodd follows Jimmy Olsen as he investigates whether the super-powered ape was wrongfully convicted of murdering his own father, the King of Gorilla City, years prior — a mystery whose broader context will hopefully be addressed in Man of Tomorrow. However, lingering questions remain regarding how this true-crime mockumentary will impact the DCU’s overarching storyline, and whether it will ultimately pave the way for the debut of Grodd’s legendary arch-enemy, The Flash.

Superman has already established the existence of speedsters with an Easter egg referencing Jay Garrick, the original Flash. Introducing Grodd and Jay Garrick before Barry Allen heavily suggests that Gunn is building toward a legacy-driven Flash mythology, potentially setting up Wally West as the DCU’s primary speedster, based on the Creature Commandos nightmare sequence.
