The entertainment landscape is in the midst of a massive shift, as Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery officially completed the merger that has been discussed for most of the last year. Paramount CEO David Ellison officially confirmed the merger and revealed that the new conglomerate will operate under the Skydance name, matching his original film company. Ellison celebrated the occasion with a lengthy message on social media, positioning Skydance as “a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling.” Now, the new mega-corporation moves forward to oversee some of the world’s biggest franchises, including Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings.
Amongst those franchises is the new DC Universe, brought to life by DC Studios under the leadership of co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. Having first kicked off in Dec. 2024, DC Studios has already seen plenty of ups and downs, with this year in particular bringing disappointing results for Supergirl in theaters alongside massive success for Lanterns on HBO Max. This merger has left Gunn and Safran’s jobs hanging in the balance, as there are countless questions about what Skydance would decide to do regarding this saga. Now, as the dust settles, it appears that DC’s dynamic duo is not going anywhere.
Deadline reported that Skydance (formerly Paramount and Warner Bros.) will stick with DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran to lead the DC Universe. The duo recently met with Skydance co-CEO David Ellison about their future, and that meeting reportedly went well. From here, all of Paramount and Warner Bros.’ film units will now report to Paramount Pictures co-chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein.
This news comes as a major relief, as the new DC Universe is still looking to find a solid footing nearly two years into its run in theaters and on TV. It is also on a hot streak right now, as Lanterns is one of HBO Max’s most popular shows before the season finale seals the fate of Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan. While Gunn and Safran appear to be locked in at DC Studios for the foreseeable future, the DC Universe’s upcoming slate remains unclear.
As of this writing, the next confirmed live-action project on DC Studios’ slate after Clayface this month is Man of Tomorrow, which completed filming in Aug. 2026 and will be released on Jul. 9, 2027. From there, DC has laid out definitive plans for other major projects, including the animated Dynamic Duo movie (Jun. 30, 2028), an animated Mister Miracle series, and Skyler Gisondo’s live-action The People v. Gorilla Grodd. Other movies and TV shows are earlier in development, but the release schedule remains in flux as Paramount and Warner Bros. move towards their next steps.
