The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate is still progressing, as DC Studios has multiple films and shows coming out of James Gunn’s superhero franchise. While 2027 will see the return of David Corenswet’s Superman, a spinoff from the 2025 movie is currently in the works.
The People v. Gorilla Grodd is continuing with principal photography, but the cast continues to grow, as Deadline reveals that The Big Bang Theory, Roseanne, and The Connors‘ star Sara Gilbert has boarded the HBO Max series. The trade states that she is playing an “important journalist,” with her character’s name still being kept heavily under wraps.
While DC Studios and HBO Max have yet to announce who she is playing, there are a number of prominent journalists in the DC Comics canon that they could be introducing. However, there have been rumors, which have yet to be confirmed or denied, that the upcoming DC TV show will feature The Daily Planet’s Heather Kelley, who was first introduced in December 2011 in Superman #2, during The New 52 run.
If Gilbert ends up playing Heather, it remains to be seen how similar or different she will be from the comics. In the lore, she was a news anchor at The Daily Planet and briefly had a romantic interest in Clark Kent, as she had only a handful of appearances, which would allow The People v. Gorilla Grodd to add more to her characterization.

There is also the possibility that Gilbert is simply playing an original player with no ties to the comics at all, as the cast has tapped several other actors in mystery roles. The comedy series also consists of Arian Moayed, Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Tim Baltz, Dan Perrault, and Andrew Leeds. When Deadline reported Holland’s initial casting on August 3, it was shared that she is supposedly playing “the female lead,” although her identity has still not been revealed.
Skyler Gisondo, who will reprise his role as Jimmy Olsen, the host of the true-crime docu series that is centered on Gorilla Grodd, is also reuniting with several supporting Superman cast members. Wendell Pierce, Beck Bennett, and Mikaela Hoover, who debuted as Perry White, Steve Lombard, and Cat Grant, in Gunn’s 2025 installment, are set to return for the show.
Jimmy Tatro is set to portray the famous Flash villain after the “superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City,” per HBO Max. The People v. Gorilla Grodd will explore how Jimmy reopens the foe’s case to determine whether or not he “was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.”
The People V. Gorilla Grodd will premiere on HBO Max, but no launch date has been announced as of yet.
