South African musician The Kiffness has sent a message of support to Ed Sheeran, urging the British pop star not to be overwhelmed by the backlash surrounding his US tour.
David Scott, who performs as The Kiffness, shared the message on social media as Sheeran faces mounting scrutiny following the removal of rapper Macklemore from his “Loop” tour.
Scott drew on his own experience of facing backlash from pro-Palestinian activists, saying he understood how intense online pressure and intimidation could become.
“Please don’t let them win. You’re an incredible talent and a genuinely good person,” Scott wrote.
He also acknowledged the difference between the criticism he experienced and what Sheeran has faced.
Scott said he had expected some backlash because he had previously been vocal about his Christian views, but argued that Sheeran was facing hate despite choosing to stay out of the political debate.
“You have a massive amount of support behind you. Don’t let the noise bring you down!” he added.
Why Ed Sheeran is facing backlash
The message comes as Sheeran’s “Loop” tour has become embroiled in controversy following Macklemore’s removal as an opening act.
Macklemore was dropped from the remaining US dates after making pro-Palestinian comments during a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey earlier this month.
Sheeran subsequently said the decision was made by the tour promoter and venues, rather than by him.
The fallout did not end there.
Several other artists associated with the tour, including Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Irish folk band Beoga, withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore.
Sheeran then performed at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday, September 19, where he addressed the controversy directly.
During the show, he said he had made difficult decisions and apologised, while also speaking about the situation in Gaza. He described the humanitarian situation there as “catastrophic and unjustifiable”.
Sheeran has previously said he wanted his concerts to remain spaces centred on music, unity and humanity rather than politics.
His Philadelphia appearance marked his first show since the Macklemore controversy erupted.
