Disney is set to hand a significant box-office distinction off to a competitor, though it will keep one hand on the proverbial baton.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially become the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office, surpassing 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the newest Spidey flick has earned $936.773 million in North American theaters, topping The Force Awakens‘ $936.6 million haul.

This, of course, is all gravy for Disney, as the company had a direct hand in both projects.
Disney, however, was not the primary entity behind Brand New Day. Subsidiary Marvel Studios played a role in its production, but it’s primarily a Sony project.

The Sony-owned Columbia Pictures is listed as the film’s primary production company. Sony Pictures Releasing distributed the film in all markets.
Sony, thus, is the true beneficiary of the film’s runaway success. That said, Disney still receives a percentage of the profits.

Corporate minutiae aside, Brand New Day‘s success is truly remarkable. Its new standing as the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office is just another feather in its cap.
Brand New Day has reached this historic milestone after just 47 days in theaters. There’s really no telling what its final total could look like.

The movie has been a juggernaut since its late-July debut, earning $360 million in its opening weekend to become the largest domestic box office bow of all time. That number accounted for just a fraction of the film’s $932 million global opening, as it earned $572 million across international markets in its initial three days.
Brand New Day would go on to top the domestic box office for an astonishing six straight weekends. Its global take now sits at $2.452 billion, good for third all-time at the worldwide box office.

It’s difficult to imagine any film replicating such gargantuan totals in the near future, but Marvel has a genuine shot later this year with the release of Avengers: Doomsday. The film has already passed $50 million in pre-sale tickets, indicating that it’ll debut to a pretty impressive total this December.

Brand New Day also served as our initial introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s iteration of the X-Men. Marvel is certainly hoping that its first X-Men film can recapture some of Spidey’s magic when it bows on May 5, 2028.
